Skiing has given me a gift and a pathway in life I always dreamed of as a kid. My fathers passion was diving and it gives me pride to know I am following my passion, as he did.
I ski raced till I was 16, eventually I was sick of the inability to express my own vision of what I thought was possible. I started to freeski the following year and have never been happier in life than when I am in the mountains. The rush of skiing a big line or getting to the bottom of a competition run when you have skied the best you ever have is indescribable.
More ABOUT CHARLIE LYONS
Charlie Lyons is another one of the many great skiers from the Southern Hemisphere who have graced the international freeski scene in recent years. The 25-year-old seems to be a typical New Zealander: always friendly with a good sense of humor and some rather strange hobbies, cricket and disk golf! More importantly, though, he is very focused when it comes to pursuing his career goals. Stemming from Christchurch on the East Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, he started skiing at the early age of four and continued to be a promising ski racer at nearby Mt. Hutt ski resort. At the age of 16, however, he felt that the confinements of the race track were to limiting to his skiing aspiration and went on to first freestyle and later on freeride skiing. Accordingly, he lists the infamous club fields of New Zealand and particularly Mt. Olympus as his favorite places to ski. Two years ago, he saw the possibility to really make it as a pro skier and started to seriously compete at big mountain competitions. Results came in quickly, first in New Zealand and then also in Europe, which earned him a spot on the Freeride World Tour 2013. Considering his talent and determination, Charlie Lyons still seems far from having reached his limits yet.
